In the spring of 2022, the St. Als Social Justice Super Leaders were looking into palm oil.  Here is a little bit of what we learned...

St. Als Social Justice Super Leaders would like you to know a little about palm oil. Palm oil is an edible
vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees
. Palm oil can be found in close to 50% of the
packaged products we find in consume/use, such as pizza, doughnuts and chocolate, to deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and lipstick. Palm oil is an extremely versatile oil. It has many uses and can be produced and processed efficiently and inexpensively. Palm oil, however, has its problems. Using so much palm oil leads to deforestation, loss of natural habitats for many animals and forced displacement of people. Production also results in the release of harmful greenhouse gases that impact our environment, and many of the “farms” use child labour.
Be a wise consumer... look for products that do not use palm oil (watch out, it is a hidden ingredient as it has many, many forms!), or use products that are made with sustainable palm oil. These products are marked RSPO certified. Thank you for your consideration.

Pick and learn about a UN sustainable development goal.
Do some investigating, come up with some strategies to meet the UN’s goal.
Eventually you will present to the gr 5&6 social justice team, and create a presentation to share on the social justice blog.

Share the Journey - Development and Peace Presentation

Janelle from Development and Peace visited our school on Friday over the lunch break.  The members of Generation Now! gathered together in the gym to hear a presentation on the Share the Journey campaign started by Pope Francis.

We learned about forced migration and its causes.  We also have begun thinking about some actions we can take to educate others and help make a difference for the migrants.

Here we are, approaching We Day Manitoba, and hard at work on social justice issues.

We have divided into two groups for the fall.  One group is focusing on POVERTY while the other is focusing on EQUALITY.

The poverty group is heading the We Scare Hunger campaign to collect non-perishable food donations for Winnipeg Harvest at our Halloween sock hop.

The equality group is taking the lead on the We are Silent campaign to show solidarity with those children around the world whose voices are not heard and their rights are ignored.  They will be collecting pledges to help fund a child to go to school (through We.org's campaign).
